Two giant pandas from China have arrived in Atlanta, bringing panda diplomacy back to the United States after a two-year absence. Ping Ping and Fu Shuang will spend the next 10 years at Zoo Atlanta under a new China-U.S. giant panda conservation agreement. What You Need to Know Ping Ping and Fu Shuang arrived in Atlanta on September 27 after departing Chengdu, China, aboard a dedicated FedEx Panda Express Boeing 777. The two giant pandas were selected based on age, genetics, health and temperament, according to China's Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Both pandas were born in 2020 and will be part of a 10-year conservation cooperation program at Zoo Atlanta. The pandas underwent a month of quarantine and transport-acclimation training in China, including preparation for the noise and conditions of their journey. Zoo Atlanta has upgraded its panda facilities with expanded indoor space, climbing structures, rock platforms, a pool and enhanced monitoring systems. Visitors will have to wait about one month before Ping Ping and Fu Shuang are expected to be publicly displayed. The arrival follows a previous 25-year panda partnership between China and Zoo Atlanta, which ended in 2024. The new panda agreement was announced after Chinese President Xi Jinping's meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, adding a diplomatic dimension to the return of the pandas.
