We were riding our motorbikes through rural Mondulkiri, Cambodia, when we noticed a woman walking alone along a dirt road.
We stopped and spoke with her.
She had just returned from a nearby construction site where she had sold some pumpkin leaves and yucca roots from her small farm. For everything she carried there, she had earned about 3.5 US dollars.
I asked if I could spend the day with her.
She agreed.
We followed her home and quietly became part of her daily routine.
She cooked her rice, then walked with us to her small farm a few hundred yards behind her house. There, she picked fresh pumpkin leaves for her lunch—and gathered whatever she could to sell each day at a construction site nearly two miles away.
Her lunch was simple: rice, fermented fish, and boiled pumpkin leaves.
But as we spent time together, we learned that her greatest struggle was not food.
It was water.
She is a Khmer Bunong Christian widow living alone in rural Mondulkiri. There is no clean water source near her home. About a mile and a half away, she has dug a small well herself. The water is not clean, but it is what she depends on every day.
During the dry season, she may wait for hours for enough water to slowly seep through the dirt walls and bottom of the well before she can collect it.
And yet, when she spoke about what she prays for every day, she did not ask for money.
She did not ask for a better house.
She did not ask for an easier life.
She simply prays for clean water.
That stayed with us.
Through Chance2Life, we want to help this woman and the community around her by helping provide a clean-water well. But we cannot do it alone.
We are sharing her story because sometimes a small act of generosity can change something as fundamental as the water a person drinks every day.
We left her that day with uncertainty—but also with a promise:
We would come back.
And we hope that when we return, we can return with the help she has been praying for.
If her story touches your heart and you would like to help us provide clean water to rural Cambodian families, you can learn more about Chance2Life and support our work here:
