This fly tying segment is a unique part of history, and we were tying this fly on a trip to the Green River for filming a television show. We just finished teaching a seminar in Laramie, Wyoming, at the University of Wyoming. After the fishing trip, Gary revealed that he could not raise his arms above his waist, and I needed to tie this nymph for the show. Over the past couple of years, I had noticed that Gary was starting to lose his balance and had difficulty in his fly casting. We were in different boats, and he was unable to cast but able to and did not want to tell the guide, so He offered to row when I found out. He revealed to me that there was no pain and that he was reluctant to go to a physician. after tying this fly and finishing the TV show, we drove to Idaho Falls, where Gary would pick up his car and drive back to Deer Lodge. I convinced him to talk on the telephone with a close Doctor friend. After the conversation, my friend told me to make sure Gary saw Dr. immediately. We all feared the worst, and he was diagnosed a few weeks later with ALS.
