He worked hard for three years to bring out an album containing the recital of the entire Adhyatma Ramayanam.
Murali Puranattukara's 20-hour MP3 album, divided into 39 segments of 30 minutes each, is commendable for its economy of musical expression, proper pronunciation of words and focus on literary content.
During the Malayalam month of Karkkidakam, every Hindu home in Kerala reverberates with the chanting of Ezhuthachan's epic. Like `Jnaneswari', Ezhuthachan's work is not just a religious text, but also a literary gem.
In its use of Malayalam language, the Adhyatma Ramayanam has been a template for just about all the works that followed. For budding Malayalam poets and serious learners of the language, experts recommend study of the works of two greats: Ezhuthachan and Kunchan Nambiar.
With depth of feeling and deceptive simplicity, Murali's MP3 album captures the spirit of Ezhuthachan's masterpiece. Murali's recital of the verse, `Kathayamama Kathayamama Kathaladisadaram Kakulsthaleelakal Kettal Mathivara...' reminds one of nippy July-August nights when grannies narrate tales from the Ramayana to kids.
A lab assistant in the Sree Ramakrishna Gurukulam School, Puranattukara, Murali has been guided in his endeavour by Vallanki Kesava Bhagavathar and K. P. Kesavan of the Government Sanskrit College, Jaipur.
"I've chosen ragas that invoke bhakti and facilitate smooth recital of the verses. Music plays a minor role because the focus is on the `sahitya' (literature),'' says Murali.
Murali studied different versions of the Adhyatma Ramayanam available in the bookshops and detected a lot of errors. "My album steers clear of 60 common errors,'' claims Murali. For instance, some versions of Ezhuthachan's work carry the verse, `Balavanmare! Ningal Padichu Japichalum Balayum Punarathibalayum Madiyathe'. In Murali's album, the word, `Balavanmare', has been replaced by `Balakanmare'. Murali had topped the Sanskrit recitation competition at the State School Youth Festival in 1993, and has made a name for himself through the radio programmes, `Nattu Pazhama' and `Kerala Peruma'.
