You've been told your cat thinks you're its mother. The truth is a little stranger, and honestly a lot sweeter. Cats never built a separate set of rules for living with people, so almost every affectionate thing your cat does to you is behavior it first learned as a kitten, with its own mom. Once you know what you're looking at, your cat has been telling you how it feels in at least 12 different ways.
I'm Annie, and I've had cats for 24 years. In this video I go through all 12 signs your cat sees you as a parent figure: why it runs to you when it's scared, why it sleeps on you, the slow blink, the belly roll (and why that one isn't an invitation for a belly rub), the soft love bites, waiting at the door for you, reacting to your voice, sitting on your things, the tail-up greeting, waiting for you before it eats, grooming your hair, and making biscuits, which is the sign that comes closest to literal proof.

Everything here is grounded in real research, including the Oregon State attachment study that found cats bond with us about as securely as babies bond with their parents, the Sussex and Portsmouth slow-blink study, the University of Tokyo work on cats recognizing your voice, and biologist John Bradshaw's writing on why cats treat us like family. Watch to the end for number 12, the one almost everyone reads wrong.
