A river doesn't ask permission. A mountain doesn't move for man.
"Stand Your Ground" is track three on Montana Knows My Name — a song about what a man owes the country that was here before he was. He's watched good men lose everything and saddle up the next day. He's seen gold inside the mountains and copper under Butte, old farms turn to houses and old trails disappear from use. He lost a friend to a grizzly and still wants the grizzly there. An eagle stole his chickens and he still looks for him in the air. But he knows who walked before him, and he knows some of those promises weren't worth a damn. So he tells the truth about it, and then decides what he will do.
Visual theme: Wind-Held Prairie — a wide prairie at first hard wind, blue grama and needlegrass laid flat in long silver sheets, low horizon under a bruised gray sky. A weathered cowboy standing square into the wind, hat brim pulled low, rolled gray plaid sleeves, denim jacket open, boots planted in gravel. Cedar fence posts leaning with the wind, barbed wire humming, a two-track gravel road disappearing into broken country. A pronghorn standing alert in short grass, dust devil turning across a stubble field, storm shelf moving over the flats.
Recorded plain, the way Henry does it: wood, wire, breath, and the sound of the room.
From the album Montana Knows My Name. Continental Divide Records.
