What makes a city feel welcoming to one person and completely hostile to another? And when we talk about hostile architecture, are we really only talking about benches, spikes, and other obvious design choices?
In this conversation, we explore these questions with Joris Lechene, looking at the relationship between architecture, coloniality, decoloniality, and the way people experience urban space. The discussion goes far beyond the usual examples of hostile architecture and into the deeper structures that influence who feels comfortable, safe, and welcome in a city.
We talk about parks, monuments, streets, playgrounds, public gardens, and commercial spaces, and how something that appears completely ordinary can carry assumptions about who a space is actually designed for. The same street or park can feel completely different depending on who you are, your social position, and your relationship to the space.
The conversation also looks at gentrification and the gradual disappearance of queer spaces, as well as the ways capitalism can influence which communities are able to remain in particular parts of a city. We question whether public space can ever truly be neutral when every design decision reflects some idea about how that space should be used.
Joris also explains the difference between decolonization and decoloniality, and why colonial structures can continue to shape society long after formal colonization has ended.
From community gardens and experimentation to changing our relationship with land, we explore what a more flexible and inclusive urban environment could look like.
Ultimately, this is a conversation about cities, architecture, power, public space, and the invisible rules that shape everyday life.
What if the most hostile spaces aren't the ones that look hostile at all?
