In this documentary, we reconstruct how thousands of Roman soldiers built a secure marching camp after an exhausting day on the road. Before they could eat or sleep, legionaries had to survey the terrain, mark the camp layout, dig a defensive ditch, raise an earthen rampart, organize the entrances, pitch their tents, protect the baggage animals, and establish the night watch. Roman marching camps were not identical wooden fortresses constructed every evening. Their defenses changed according to the terrain, available daylight, weather, enemy activity, and the length of the army’s stay. Speed came from discipline: every unit understood its position, every group received a section of the perimeter, and multiple jobs could begin at the same time. Discover how Roman military engineering, camp organization, centurions, surveyors, sentries, watchwords, ditches, ramparts, and controlled gates allowed a vulnerable marching column to become a defended temporary town before darkness arrived.
