Tony Martin, "Tenement Symphony," from "The Big Store" (1948)

"Tenement Symphony," as featured in the 1941 film "The Big Store." Music by Hal Borne, Words by Ray Golden & Sid Kuller (who were both scriptwriters on the film). Vocal by Tony Martin, with the Skyrockets Orchestra, directed by Woolf Phillips. Victor 20-3274-A&B Recorded c. June 1948 The song was a big hit in Britain. Although it takes up both sides of the record, this is a much later and truncated version of what appears in the film and one adapted for a British audience. Woolf Phillips was music conductor of the Skyrockets orchestra at the London Palladium, where Martin appeared in concert in June of 1948. This recording was doubtless made to mark his visit to the UK, and the disc was also released in the US. The song became one of Martin's signature pieces. I do not own the copyright to this recording. This video is for educational purposes only.
