Switch off your aquarium lights tonight and shine a flashlight on the glass. If you've got the right tiny shrimp, you'll catch them working the night shift: cleaning film off your plants, finding the food your fish missed, and tidying up while you sleep. Here are 5 beginner shrimp that help clean your tank, what each one actually cleans (and doesn't), and the single biggest reason new shrimp die in their first week. No brand names, no sponsors. Just honest advice about the smallest cleanup crew in your aquarium. THE 5 SHRIMP IN THIS VIDEO 5. Bamboo shrimp: filters floating particles out of the water with tiny fans 4. Ghost shrimp: cheap, fast scavengers (watch out for look-alike whisker shrimp) 3. Babaulti shrimp: quiet grazers in surprising colours 2. Cherry shrimp: the popular colony builder (all the colours are one species) 1. Amano shrimp: the hardest-working algae eater, and it can't take over your tank WHAT SHRIMP DO AND DON'T DO They graze biofilm and soft algae, eat leftover food, and break down dead leaves. They don't replace water changes, your filter or good feeding habits. They keep a healthy tank tidier. They don't fix a neglected one. 3 RULES FOR HAPPY SHRIMP Add them to a mature tank, not a brand-new one. Drip acclimate slowly, over about an hour. Don't pour store water into your tank. Keep copper away. It's in many fish medicines and some fertilisers, so always read the label. PLEASE NOTE Bigger fish, including many cichlids, goldfish and puffers, will eat small shrimp, and bettas can go either way. Give shrimp plenty of moss and plants to hide in. And if you find what looks like a dead shrimp, check first. It may just be an empty shell from a molt. Never release shrimp, plants or tank water into ponds, streams or drains. Tell me in the comments: do you keep shrimp already? Which ones, and have you ever had one turn out to be a whisker shrimp in disguise? No judgement here. Every one of us has been surprised by something we brought home in a bag. ABOUT THIS CHANNEL Pull up a chair.
