Jazz teachers often have you set the metronome on beats 2 and 4 because it helps you develop the feeling of the backbeat and swing, rather than relying on the metronome to tell you every beat. It also creates a more "jazz" feeling... BUT only if you do it right!
In this video, I’m trying out a little metronome experiment with the first A section of Lullaby of Birdland.
I start by practicing with the metronome on beats 2 and 4, (or do i?) then switch to a drum beat to see how the bass line feels with a more realistic jazz groove.
Just a bit of experimenting, listening, and trying to improve my time and feel on bass.
Comments or suggestions always welcome
