I didn't eat anything today.
Meetings in the morning.
Something urgent after lunch. By the time I looked up it was eight, and the office was almost empty.
So tonight, no toppings. No extra pork, no egg. I just wanted noodles. Nothing else.
Kae-dama means you order another serving of noodles for the same bowl of soup.
¥210 each. You write it on a small slip of paper, press the button, and it arrives in about a minute.
I did it four times.
By the third one I already knew it was too much.
I ordered the fourth anyway.
Here's the thing. We have a lunch break.
One hour, written into the contract.
Most days I eat at my desk, with one hand on the keyboard. Some days, like today, I don't eat at all. Nobody told me not to.
The hour is just there, unused, while everyone keeps working.
And the higher you go, the shorter that hour gets.
The people above me eat faster than I do, or not at all.
That's the part I still don't understand. You climb, and the reward is less time.
So it all lands at night. One meal, too late, too much. Four stacked bowls.
One very full salaryman. On the way home I bought water, and that was the best part of the night. --- Do you actually take your lunch break?
And in your country, do people higher up get more time, or less?
I'd really like to know.
