FAR COAST — Ambient Music for Listening to the Unknown

The road ends several kilometres before the station. From there, a service railway follows the white cliffs, passing through short tunnels before arriving inside the building itself. You step onto a platform smelling of salt and warm electrical equipment. Through the windows opposite, the ocean stretches to an empty horizon. You have been sent to inspect the coastal monitoring network. The assignment allows ten days, though the plans suggest a much larger installation than you expected. Entire floors extend into the cliff. A long observation gallery hangs above the water, and an enormous dish overlooks the coast. Most of the station operates automatically. In the equipment rooms, paper charts advance beneath fine metal pens. Each recorder corresponds to another outpost farther along the shore. You can see several from the gallery: pale structures becoming difficult to distinguish from the cliffs as the distance increases. The maintenance records are thorough. They document storm damage, replacement cables and decades of repairs. What they never describe is the purpose of the network. The original drawings refer to a department you cannot locate in your briefing documents. On your fourth evening, you find a coastal survey pinned behind a cabinet. The railway continues well beyond the terminus shown on your map. More stations are marked along its route, each with a date beside it. Several dates are still months away. You take the survey to the gallery. Far down the coast, beyond the last visible building, a small amber light comes on.
