In 2017, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the most ambitious construction project in human history: NEOM — a $500 billion futuristic megacity in the desert, powered entirely by renewable energy. Its centerpiece, The Line, would be a 170-kilometer mirrored city housing 9 million people with no cars, no streets, and no emissions.
Seven years and $50 billion later, the contracts have been canceled. The CEO has been fired. The ski resort lost its Winter Games. The World Cup stadium was shelved. And an internal audit found evidence of deliberate financial manipulation by the project’s own management.
As of 2026, construction on The Line has been delayed until at least 2030. Billions in contracts with major builders were terminated. And the villages that were cleared to make room for NEOM — with residents threatened with death sentences for refusing to leave — sit empty.
