Parking Sensors Not Working? Here's the Fix (DIY)

Reverse parking sensor beeping with nothing behind you? Here's how I stopped the false alarms on this car. No new parts and no trip to the mechanic. The culprit here turned out to be a tow bar: the tow ball sits high enough to line up with the two middle sensors, so the system reads it as a permanent obstacle and beeps the whole time you're in reverse. Before you start disconnecting anything, I run the easy checks first. Some cars have a button that simply switches the parking sensors off, so it's worth looking. Then make sure the sensor faces are clean, since dirt alone can set them off, and check that nothing is actually in the way. When it came down to the tow ball, the fix was to get under the back of the bumper and rotate the affected sensor to around a 45 degree angle, working by feel until it found the sweet spot where it ignores the tow ball but still picks up real obstacles. If adjusting doesn't get you there, I show the backup: tracking down the buzzer in the boot, easing off the trim panels with a soft plastic tool, and disconnecting it.
