More than two thousand years ago, a Greek ambassador described the Andhras as a mighty nation with thirty walled towns, a vast army and a thousand war elephants. Yet a Vedic text from around the same era described them as outsiders living beyond the edge of the Vedic world. So who were the ancient Andhras? Did their ancestors even speak Telugu? And what does DNA reveal about the people who speak Telugu today, close to a hundred million strong?
We travel from stone tools buried in volcanic ash at Jwalapuram to the edicts of Ashoka, from the legend of the three sacred lingas behind the name Telugu to the first inscription written fully in Telugu, from the Chenchus of the Nallamala forest and the Savaras of the eastern hills to the great tribal festival at Medaram, the irrigation tanks of the Kakatiyas, the poetry of Nannaya and the songs of Tyagaraja. Then the DNA speaks, revealing why the Telugu people span almost the entire range of South Indian genetic diversity, how a forest people named in a three-thousand-year-old text may still live in the same hills today, and why the Telugus were never one people at all.
A note on accuracy: the genetic patterns described are broad findings from studies of South Indian and Telugu-speaking populations; many Telugu communities have not yet been studied in detail, and no ancient DNA from the Telugu region itself has been published so far. The origin of the word Telugu, the identity of peoples named in early texts, the makers of the Jwalapuram tools and some dates are debated by scholars. Figures attributed to Megasthenes survive only through later writers such as Pliny the Elder. No community, caste, region or tribe is ranked above another. Be careful with "Aryan %", "Dravidian %" or "purity" claims from hobbyist calculators; they are not peer-reviewed.
