Major Mohit Sharma was an Indian Army Para Special Forces commando who went undercover in Kashmir as “Iftikhar Bhatt” to infiltrate the Hizbul Mujahideen network. This is the story of one of the most dangerous undercover operations associated with his military career. Before becoming a decorated Para SF officer, Mohit Sharma came from a middle-class family in Ghaziabad and was determined to join the Army despite his family’s plans for him to pursue engineering. After NDA training, service in the Madras Regiment and Rashtriya Rifles, and selection into Para Special Forces, he developed an unusual approach to intelligence gathering. In 2004, according to accounts of the operation, Sharma volunteered for an undercover mission in South Kashmir. His identity, appearance and background were transformed into that of a Kashmiri militant named Iftikhar Bhatt. He learned the local language and cultural details and gradually built trust inside a Hizbul Mujahideen network. The mission eventually brought him face-to-face with Abu Torara and Abu Sabzar, described in the story as senior Hizbul Mujahideen commanders. What happened inside that hideout became the decisive moment of the operation. Years later, in March 2009, Major Mohit Sharma was involved in another operation in the Kupwara forests after militants crossed the Line of Control. Despite being wounded during the battle, he continued directing his team and fighting until he succumbed to his injuries. On 26 January 2010, Major Mohit Sharma was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime military gallantry award.
