Podcast Recap: Melanie Linder on Higher Education Marketing & Student Recruitment Strategy Just wrapped an insightful conversation with Melanie Linder, VP of Marketing and Communications at University of North Dakota, on the "On Brand" podcast! Here's what we covered: Key Takeaways: From Private Sector to Higher Ed Mission Melanie's 25+ year career spans corporate marketing (ad agencies, IT companies, catalog businesses) to higher education. After working with K12 educators at an IT firm, she fell in love with the education mission and transitioned to university marketing—first at University of Texas at Brownsville, then UW Madison, and now UND where she's been for 8 years. Corporate vs. Higher Ed Marketing: More Similar Than Different While higher ed was historically less metrics-driven, today's landscape mirrors corporate marketing. Students are consumers with choices, online learning is ubiquitous, and institutions must "sell" their value proposition. Melanie brought private sector discipline by implementing KPIs and measurement frameworks—something largely absent when she arrived at UND. The Evolving Digital Landscape: SEO → AI Search The shift from traditional search engine optimization to AI-powered search engines has fundamentally changed traffic patterns. AI doesn't send users to homepages anymore—they land directly on topic-specific pages. Every page now needs optimization, not just key landing pages. Reputation management on platforms like Reddit is equally critical. Enrollment Challenges in a Shifting Market The "enrollment cliff" is real: demographic shifts mean fewer high school graduates over the next 4-5 years (2008 recession babies). However, UND is outperforming national trends with five consecutive years of enrollment growth and record freshmen classes (25% growth two years ago, 16% last year). Success requires coordinated strategy with enrollment management and academic deans, plus strategic pivots to adult learner and online markets. Authentic Student Representation Wins The "Knowledge Knows No Boundaries" campaign at UT Brownsville resonated powerfully with first-gen students despite leadership hesitation. Conversely, a later adult learner campaign using abstract "Leaders in Action" imagery fell flat. Lesson learned: showcase real students from your target demographic—authenticity beats vision statements. Online Learning: 1/3 of Enrollment, Growing Strategically UND has one of the longest-standing accredited online engineering degrees in the country. About one-third of enrollment is now online (military, in-state, and specialized programs). Future growth isn't online-only—students want hybrid flexibility with campus experience. Infrastructure planning now accounts for both on-campus and online capacity over the next 10 years. Retention via Owned Communication Channels Rather than a separate budget line, retention relies on owned channels (email, text, advisor coordination) shared across campus units. Overhead costs are distributed, making retention marketing cost-efficient. Advice for Recent Graduates Melanie's guidance: enjoy this moment, don't beat yourself up, network intentionally, say yes to opportunities even when uncertain, embrace learning mindset, and reach out to interesting people for informational interviews. People almost never say no—and these conversations often lead to unexpected opportunities. The Power of Proactive Outreach A simple 15-minute informational interview request works remarkably well. Melanie has landed multiple jobs this way, and David shares his own success reaching out to a Chicago mayoral candidate on Facebook—leading to a fascinating campaign finance committee role.
