Why You Keep Replaying Yesterday and Fearing Tomorrow — The Buddha's One Excellent Night
At night, the mind often travels everywhere except where we actually are. It returns to yesterday—replaying conversations, mistakes, regrets, and things we wish had happened differently. Then it races toward tomorrow, imagining problems that have not yet arrived.
Tonight, we explore the Buddha’s teaching known as “One Excellent Night,” preserved in the Bhaddekaratta Sutta
This teaching offers a simple but profound invitation: do not chase after the past, and do not place your hopes and fears entirely in the future. Instead, clearly understand what is happening here and now.
The past has already occurred. The future has not yet arrived. Yet the mind can spend hours moving between the two, carrying yesterday into bed and trying to solve tomorrow before morning comes.
Through gentle Buddhist reflections on impermanence, awareness, attachment, and the present moment, this sleep meditation invites you to loosen that habit for tonight.
You do not have to rewrite yesterday before you sleep.
You do not have to predict tomorrow.
For now, there is only this breath, this body resting in bed, and this moment.
Allow the day to become the past. Allow tomorrow to wait for tomorrow. Let these ancient teachings accompany you as your thoughts become quieter and you gradually drift toward deep, peaceful sleep.
May you be peaceful.
May you be present.
May you rest deeply tonight.
