To understand what had happened to Maya, the story goes back to the time when she had first entered the family after marriage. On her wedding day, Maya had dressed herself in simple makeup and traditional clothes, hoping to impress her new family. Instead of appreciating her, Sunita criticized her makeup, calling it terrible, while Bhumi openly mocked her appearance. Even her grandmother-in-law made comments about her simple style. Maya was hurt but remained quiet because she wanted to become a good daughter-in-law. Her husband Ram also never appreciated her. Soon after the wedding, Maya and Ram went shopping together. While crossing the road, Maya pulled Ram away from a speeding motorcycle to protect him. Instead of thanking her, Ram looked at the woman riding the motorcycle and praised her modern appearance. He then compared Maya to the woman and insulted her, saying that he did not understand why he had ended up with someone like her. Maya was deeply hurt, but she continued trying to adjust to her new family. At home, she worked hard, followed everyone’s instructions, and tried to maintain the family’s traditions. However, she was constantly criticized for her appearance. Whenever she dressed simply, everyone called her old-fashioned, unattractive, or village-like. Bhumi especially enjoyed making fun of her, and the other family members often laughed along. Maya gradually lost confidence in herself. She believed that if she became more modern, perhaps her husband and family would finally appreciate her. Therefore, on the day of her brothers-in-law’s engagement, she decided to change her appearance. She wore a short red dress, styled her curly hair, applied bold lipstick and smoky eye makeup, and came downstairs proudly, hoping that everyone would compliment her.
