Join me for a complete 21-mile motorcycle ride along the A149 Norfolk Coast Road, riding my Honda Rebel 500 cruiser from Wells-next-the-Sea to Cromer on a bright and sunny day.
This is a no-talking ASMR motorcycle ride with the complete journey recorded from start to finish. The audio is exactly as I heard it while riding — Honda Rebel 500 engine noise, road noise, bike sounds and wind noise are all left in.
The A149 is a popular route for tourists, motorcyclists and bikers heading along the Norfolk coast, but is it really as good as its reputation suggests?
The road is tight, twisty and often bumpy, with surprisingly few sustained sea views. There are occasional glimpses of the coast, but you need to keep your eyes open because they can disappear almost as quickly as they appear. Much of the route is rural, passing through villages including Stiffkey and Blakeney, as well as numerous smaller communities along the way.
Once you reach some of the villages, the A149 becomes extremely narrow, in places barely wide enough for traffic to pass comfortably in single file. This creates plenty of bottlenecks, queues and stop-start riding.
I deliberately left the entire journey in the video. My sat nav estimated a considerably shorter journey time, but the actual ride took just over 47 minutes. Nothing has been edited out simply to make the ride look faster or more enjoyable — traffic, queues, slow-moving vehicles and sitting behind other road users are all part of the experience.
There are opportunities to overtake along the A149, but this was my first time riding the route and I didn't know the road. More importantly, overtaking often seems pointless when another queue of traffic is waiting around the next few corners.
So, rather than trying to make the ride appear faster or more exciting than it really is, this video shows the A149 Norfolk Coast Road as it actually feels to ride: steady, stop-start and busy.
And yes, I've deliberately kept the wind noise.
Some motorcycle videos try to remove wind noise, but wind is an unavoidable part of riding a motorcycle. No matter what helmet or earplugs you use, there will always be some wind noise. For me, removing it would take away part of the reality of the ride.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride from Wells-next-the-Sea to Cromer on the Honda Rebel 500.
Whether you think the A149 Norfolk Coast Road is a fantastic motorcycle route or you're wondering what all the fuss is about, this is the complete, unfiltered ride so you can make up your own mind.
No talking. No music. No unnecessary editing. Just the road, the Rebel 500 and the real sounds of riding.
