Current knowledge plays a vital role in shaping the quality of care, teaching and support children receive in early years settings. This lesson explores seven areas that inform everyday practice: child development research, statutory and non-statutory guidance, inclusive practice, social and cultural awareness, technology, and mental health and wellbeing. You will consider how research influences pedagogy, how the EYFS and SEND Code of Practice guide provision, and how Development Matters can support planning and assessment. The lesson also highlights practical approaches such as sensory play, visual aids, sensory-friendly spaces, culturally relevant activities, emotional coaching and calm corners. It explains why digital tools should be balanced with hands-on play and identifies common barriers to staying up to date, including time, resources and translating ideas into practice. Finally, it suggests sustainable ways for teams to maintain current knowledge through peer observation, shared reading and reflective discussion.
