Ford's River Rouge plant, Dearborn, Michigan, 1915–1941: lake boats brought iron ore and coal to its own docks, and finished cars drove out the other end. At its peak in the 1930s, more than 100,000 people worked inside its gates. On May 26, 1937, union organizers with a city permit stood on the overpass at Gate 4. This is how the Rouge really worked, and why the people who ran it had to fight their way to a union. 📌 What you’ll learn • How coke ovens, blast furnaces and tank cars of molten iron turned lake-boat ore into Ford engine blocks without the iron ever cooling • What Ford's own 1940 flow chart meant by a complete car built in 28 hours, and what that number leaves out • What happened on the overpass at Gate 4, and how a photographer's hidden negatives led to the UAW contract of June 20, 1941 • Why the Rouge wore out 3,500 mop heads a month, and what stands on the site today Educational and historical content. Some scenes are illustrative reconstructions based on the historical record. 📚 Key sources • The Henry Ford, K-12 Research Guide: Ford Rouge Factory (updated 2026) • The Henry Ford, Ford Rouge Plant Pictorial Flow Chart, Complete Car Can Be Built in 28 Hours, 1940 (THF113889) • Kristen Chinery, Battle of the Overpass, Walter P.
