Drawing from years as a County Veterans Service Officer, I walk through the essential documents every veteran should have on hand, why they matter for both the living veteran and surviving family members, and a practical checklist you can start using today. I also make the case for a broader National Veteran & Family Records Preparedness Campaign so fewer families are left starting from scratch. Watch, get your own records in order this week, and pass the challenge on to others. Sample Veteran & Family Records Checklist Essential Military Service Records Record Why it matters Have it? DD-214 Establishes military service, dates, character of service and other separation information; may be needed for VA, burial and other benefits. ☐ NGB-22 (if applicable) Documents National Guard service and separation. ☐ DD-215 / corrections (if applicable) Documents corrections to a DD-214. ☐ Retirement/separation orders (if applicable) Establishes retirement or separation status and related service information. ☐ Awards and decorations documentation May establish awards received during or after active service. ☐ Rank/promotion documentation May be needed to establish final or later military rank. ☐ Essential VA Records Record Why it matters Have it? Every VA Decision Letter Documents VA decisions, ratings, effective dates and reasons for decisions. ☐ VA award/benefit letters Documents benefits and payments being received. ☐ C-File / claims file (when appropriate) Contains the veteran's VA claims history and supporting documentation. ☐ Important VA correspondence May establish benefit history or actions taken with VA. ☐ Essential Medical/Service Evidence Record Why it matters Have it? Service Treatment Records Documents medical conditions, injuries, treatment and events during service. ☐ Important post-service medical records May support future claims or establish continuing medical history. ☐ Nexus opinions/medical opinions (if applicable) May be important to an existing or future VA claim. ☐ Essential Family & Survivor Records Record Why it matters Have it?
