With over 1,300 years of history, this ancient town was once a pivotal hub on the Ancient Tea Horse Road and stands today as China’s largest and best-preserved Tibetan settlement. I chose not to visit under the moonlight, but in the quiet of an overcast morning. Free from harsh sunlight, the town reveals its true heartbeat and historic contours amidst the stillness. Perched atop Guishan Park, the giant golden prayer wheel, engraved with sacred scriptures and the Eight Auspicious Symbols, is the soul of this land’s devotion. So massive that no single person can move it, it demands the collective effort of strangers turning it together—always clockwise, three full rounds. In those shared rotations, the weight of faith passes through your palms, merging everyone's hopes into a singular rhythm. Wandering through the cobblestone lanes and quiet corners, the reverence forged over centuries feels tangible.
