How did engineers build the Golden Gate Bridge across deep water, violent currents, heavy fog, and one of America's busiest harbor entrances during the Great Depression?
This documentary follows the complete construction story of the Golden Gate Bridge in chronological order - from Joseph Strauss's early hybrid proposal and Charles A. Ellis's overlooked calculations to financing, offshore tower foundations, transcontinental steel shipments, aerial cable spinning, the roadway, and the 1937 opening.
Discover how crews built the south tower foundation 110 feet below mean low water, assembled 746-foot towers, and spun two main cables containing a combined 80,000 miles of wire. The episode also examines the bridge's worker-safety program, the net that saved 19 men, the scaffold collapse that killed ten workers, and the Art Deco design and International Orange color.
At completion, the 4,200-foot main span was the longest single span in the world. The bridge created a permanent highway connection between San Francisco and Marin County and proved that an unprecedented suspension bridge could be built in one of America's most demanding marine environments.
