What is creativity in music? When a musician performs something that was already anticipated, practiced or stored within the musical mind, where does creativity actually begin? In this Special Conversation from Sādhana Stories with Sharath, Sharath examines the difficult boundary between preconceived ideas and genuine creativity. Can an artist always recognize the difference between something they have consciously planned and something that emerges spontaneously? And who gets to decide where that line is? The conversation moves deeper into the nature of musical understanding: whether learning several compositions in a raga is enough to understand the raga itself, or whether the artist must go beyond individual phrases and compositions to understand its deeper character, bhava and identity. Perhaps creativity in music is not always about creating something that never existed before. Perhaps it is about uncovering something that was already there. And if so, what does that tell us about the nature of musical creativity itself?
