Hi! I'm Michi, traveling Japan in a camper van. Day 3 of my Tohoku festival journey. Before the evening festival, I visited the Sannai-Maruyama Site in Aomori — one of Japan's largest Jomon-era settlements, where hundreds of people lived from about 5,900 to 4,200 years ago. Homes dug into the earth against the harsh winters, pillars of chestnut wood, roofs of bark. A whole village built from nothing but nature. Standing there, 5,000 years of Japanese life felt suddenly close. That night: the Hirosaki Neputa Festival. Same Tsugaru region as yesterday's Aomori Nebuta — yet completely different. Fan-shaped lanterns instead of towering figures: heroic warriors on the front, a graceful beauty on the back.
