They told us to close our eyes and pray. When we opened them, the land was gone. In this short reflection, I look back at life in Africa before colonialism: how Igbo names pointed to a Creator, how trade moved freely across a continent with no visas or borders, and how the partitioning of Africa still shapes our divisions and weak currencies today. I’m not against Christianity. I’m asking why we forgot the good things in our own cultures, and what it would take to go back to the drawing board. Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart said it best through Obierika: something was cut that held us together. This video is about what that was, and whether we can mend it. What did your grandparents’ culture teach that you’ve never been taught in church or school? Tell me in the comments. Subscribe to Remember Who You Are for more Pan-African history and identity.
