DNA Proves the Jewish People Are Descended from a Civilization Nobody Knew Existed

For centuries, the origins of Jewish populations were reconstructed through scripture, historical records, archaeology and oral tradition. Ancient DNA has now added an entirely new layer to that story. Genetic studies of Jewish communities across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia have identified a substantial shared ancestral component connected to the ancient Near East, while also revealing the migrations, admixture and population movements that shaped Jewish communities over thousands of years. One of the major breakthroughs came from ancient DNA recovered from 93 skeletons from archaeological sites across modern Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Researchers found substantial ancestry connections between modern Jewish and other regional populations and Bronze Age Canaanite populations. The data also revealed that ancient Canaanites themselves were formed through earlier population mixing, including ancestry connected to earlier Levantine inhabitants and populations associated with the Caucasus or eastern Anatolia. Later research into medieval Jewish remains from Erfurt, Germany, added another remarkable chapter, revealing unexpected genetic diversity and a major maternal founder lineage within that community. The genetic history becomes even more complicated when Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish communities are examined separately. The evidence points toward an enduring Near Eastern ancestral component alongside centuries of migration, conversion, intermarriage and regional admixture.
