Don't get it twisted or misunderstand what I'm saying.
Building a business is important. Learning the skills, systems, and strategies it takes to run one is important, too.
But I think a lot of us business owners misunderstand something when we come onto social media.
Unless your plan is to grow strictly through paid advertising and traditional digital marketing, you're entering a completely different world.
*You're entering the world of content marketing.*
And organic social media plays by a different set of rules.
You can't just show up, talk about your business, promote your offers, and expect people to care.
You have to learn how to become a creator.
You have to get comfortable developing ideas, telling stories, communicating your perspective, understanding your audience, and making content people actually want to consume.
You have to learn how to earn attention before you can expect to turn that attention into trust.
And that's the part I neglected.
I was so focused on building the business that I kept rushing past the very thing I needed to develop first.
*The creator behind the business.*
I wanted the results of having a personal brand without putting in the work of building one.
And here's what I've had to accept:
Nobody is going to magically make your business work just because you want it badly enough.
On social media, people don't automatically care about your business, your offer, or how much work you've put into building it.
You have to give them a reason to care.
You have to capture their attention, earn their trust, and show them why what you have to say matters.
*Then your business skills come into play.*
That's when your offer, your systems, your services, and everything you've learned about business can help you serve those people and genuinely make a difference in their lives.
I'm not saying you have to become a big creator before you can build a successful business.
I'm saying that if you're choosing to build your business through organic content and a personal brand, you can't keep skipping the part where you actually become a creator.
That's the lesson I'm learning.
And that's why I'm going back to build what I should've been building all along.
