The alien engineers called it reckless. The human mechanic called it a stuck part.
In this HFY sci-fi story, Lucent Meridian is the finest survey ship the Concordance has ever built.
Then its first full-power drive trial fails.
The power-transfer sleeve will not engage.
The coolant inlet is stuck.
The radiator will not deploy.
The jump coupling refuses to seat.
The crew begins preparing to abandon ship.
Then human mechanic Dulcie Haversham opens her tool bag.
Inside is a rusty wrench.
At first, Chief Engineer Qevrek Aum is horrified when she strikes part of the new drive with it.
Then the mechanism moves.
Power comes back.
And what looks like crude “percussive maintenance” turns out to be something much more deliberate.
Dulcie is not randomly hitting machinery.
She is listening to how housings ring.
Comparing working and failed assemblies.
Removing mechanical load before applying force.
Using reinforced structures to transmit vibration.
And combining practical experience with Qevrek’s precision measurements to identify where components are binding.
Together, they discover the real problem: a misaligned support cradle that placed several mechanisms under uneven preload during the full-power trial.
Once the underlying geometry is corrected, the human mechanic and alien engineer work through the remaining failures one by one.
Sometimes with probes.
Sometimes with braces.
Sometimes with a boot.
And sometimes with a very large mallet.
A funny, grounded HFY story about human mechanics, practical engineering, diagnostics, percussive maintenance, alien engineers, and the difference between hitting something blindly and knowing exactly where—and why—to hit it.
