From Rockettes to Roots | An Omaha & Iowa Road Trip

What happens when an event celebrating someone from your showgirl past unexpectedly takes you back to your family farming roots? This trip began in Omaha, Nebraska, with the wedding of a fabulous friend I danced with ages ago as a Radio City Rockette. It turned into a wonderful mini-reunion filled with showbiz pals, dancing, art, music, good food, and even impulse-buying a pink cowboy hat. But before heading home, my hubby and I took a very different kind of excursion into Iowa farm country to visit the place where my dad grew up. We stayed in a converted grain bin on my dad's cousin's farm, drove through miles of cornfields, visited cattle and barn cats, and stopped at the Nishna Heritage Museum—a place my grandmother helped create. The big bonus moment was singing the “Star-Spangled Banner” inside an actual grain bin. Couldn't resist the great acoustics. 😂 Somewhere along the way, I started wondering whether these two seemingly different parts of my story—my family's farming roots and my years as a professional dancer—might have more in common than I'd ever realized.
