An old trucker who drove from 1975 to 2015 tells eight stories from the road that he and his friends never could explain. 1976 — Somewhere south of Woodward, Oklahoma, something knocks on the passenger door at 55 miles an hour. It will knock again, years later. 1979 — Every time Earl crosses a Wyoming scale westbound, his rig weighs exactly one grown man too much. 1984 — On US-50 in Nevada, the same woman in a yellow coat sits at the same picnic table. Three times. 1988 — Rosalee picks up a sealed load with nobody at the warehouse. Inside is everything from a house that burned in 1961. 1991 — A driver wakes up in his sleeper outside Fort Stockton, Texas. The truck is moving. Nobody is at the wheel. 1993 — On Montana's Hi-Line, hundreds of animals stand by the road at night, all staring south. 1996 — Junior's wife says he just called her from a place called Dell's Corner. Junior has never heard of it. 1998 — A stray dog rides along for three weeks, until the night it refuses to let the driver back into his own truck. This is a work of fiction inspired by the real culture of old-school American trucking. Names, characters and events are invented.
