Judy Garland Was One of Hollywood's Highest-Paid Stars. Someone Greedy Took It ALL From Her.

Everyone blamed the pills. For sixty years, that was the story — Judy Garland, one of the greatest live performers America ever produced, dead broke and addicted, a cautionary tale about her own self-destruction. It wasn't the whole story. It wasn't even the real one. This video traces where Judy Garland's money actually went: from her 1961 comeback at Carnegie Hall — one of the most celebrated nights in live performance history — through the years immediately after, when she signed over power of attorney to agent David Begelman and watched millions of dollars disappear through unauthorized checks, a Cadillac retitled in his name, and a blackmail story that may never have been true at all. By 1968, one of the highest-earning performers in the country was touring because she had no other choice. What makes this different from the usual Judy Garland story: David Begelman didn't just get away with it. He went on to run Columbia Pictures — and in 1978, Columbia's own accountants caught him running the exact same scheme on the studio itself, independently of anything Sid Luft had ever alleged. 📌 A note on accuracy: Much of the account of Begelman's handling of Garland's finances comes from her then-husband Sid Luft, who was not a neutral witness and had his own grievances with Begelman. The alleged blackmail photograph has never been independently confirmed. Begelman's later indictment for forgery and grand theft at Columbia Pictures, however, is a matter of public record, confirmed by investigators with no connection to Luft. 🔔 Subscribe for more real stories behind the Hollywood legends everyone thinks they already know. 💬 Which Hollywood legend's story do you want us to dig into next?
