Before The Codex — Stories from before the record began. How did humans survive an Ice Age winter, with no shops, no farms and no central heating? During the Last Glacial Maximum, ice sheets covered much of the Northern Hemisphere and Ice Age Europe was a cold, windy steppe. This documentary follows the evidence for how people solved the problems of cold, shelter, fuel, food and knowledge, one problem at a time. From the 50,000-year-old bone needle in Denisova Cave in Siberia and the fired-clay impressions of cord and fabric in the Czech Republic, to the mammoth-bone structures at Mezhyrich in Ukraine, a flint tip lodged in a mammoth rib at Kraków in Poland, and the rich burials of two boys at Sunghir in Russia, the film asks what each find can and cannot tell us. Much of this is debated, and the film says so.
