Every filmmaker wants to know how to make a low budget film. The real question underneath it is this: what am I giving up? Most people think it's production value. It's not. What you give up is time, control, and your margin for error. How many things can go wrong before the whole film stops. I've produced 25 independent features, made for ten thousand dollars, sixty thousand, a few hundred thousand, and north of five million with Al Pacino on the poster. This is the ladder: four budget tiers, four of my films, and what each tier actually buys you. THE CONSTRAINT LADDER TIER ONE, $10K OR LESS (Grounded): total control, zero redundancy. Eight episodes of television, almost every line deferred, my dad on camera. Nobody gives you notes, and nobody catches your mistakes. TIER TWO, UNDER $100K (WTF: World Thumbwrestling Federation): competence where it counts. A real DP, real sound, a real wrestling ring. But no safety margin, and a cast too big for the budget. TIER THREE, UNDER $1 MILLION (The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain): time. Executive produced by Morgan Freeman, built to live in one apartment so every hour went to performance instead of company moves. TIER FOUR, $1 MILLION AND UP (The Ritual): a name. A name changes the financing and the distribution. It does not change the movie. More money does not buy you a better film. It buys you a wider margin for error. The story, the performances, the choices you make in the edit: that part is free. THIS WEEK: figure out which tier you're actually in. Not the one you're pitching. Then ask whether your script was written for it.
