Tajpur and Mandarmani: A Tale of Two Beaches
Before the new road was built, visiting both Tajpur and Mandarmani in one trip required a long, bumpy detour back to the main highway. Today, they are linked by a stunning, continuous coastal road.
1. Tajpur: The Silent, Scenic Retreat
Located approximately 5 km west of Mandarmani, Tajpur is the quieter, more secluded sibling.
Vibe: Tranquil, uncrowded, and close to nature. It is famous for being relatively untouched by commercialization.
Key Attraction: Its most distinct feature is the presence of thousands of red crabs that cover the beach during low tide, painting the golden sand a vibrant crimson. It is also surrounded by dense casuarina forests, making it an ideal spot for peaceful walks, nature photography, and solitude seekers.
2. Mandarmani: The Lively Hub of Adventure
Mandarmani is the most popular and commercially developed of the two, known for its vast, flat expanse of beach.
Vibe: Bustling, energetic, and tourist-heavy, offering a wide range of luxury resorts and budget hotels.
Key Attraction: Because its shoreline is unusually flat, Mandarmani is one of the few places in India where people can drive legally on the beach (though this is increasingly restricted due to environmental concerns). It is the go-to destination for water sports like paragliding, jet-skiing, and banana boat rides, as well as lively beachside markets and shacks.
The Game Changer: The New Digha-Mandarmani Marine Drive
The recent opening of the pitched, multi-kilometer Marine Drive—which includes a significant bridge over the Champa River Mohana—has revolutionized tourism in the area.
Seamless Connection: The drive between Tajpur and Mandarmani has been reduced to approximately 15–20 minutes along a smooth, scenic route directly parallel to the coastline. Previously, this journey took over an hour via the crowded highway.
A "Two-in-One" Experience: Tourists can now easily enjoy the best of both worlds. You can stay in a lively resort in Mandarmani and take a short drive to experience the solitude of Tajpur, or vice versa.
Scenic Views: The drive itself is now a major attraction, offering panoramic views where the azure waters of the Bay of Bengal meet lush green palm trees and casuarina groves, particularly beautiful during sunrise and sunset.
