Originating as a modest Norman structure in the 11th century, it expanded into a grand wool church and holds a dark, fascinating chapter of the English Civil War. In 1649, approximately 340 mutineering soldiers known as the Levellers—early pioneers of democratic and egalitarian ideals—were imprisoned inside this very church by forces loyal to Oliver Cromwell. During their terrifying captivity, a desperate soldier named Anthony Sedley used his dagger to carve his name into the church's lead font, an etching that remains starkly visible today. The mutiny ended tragically on May 17th when three ringleaders were executed by firing squad in the churchyard.
