Your Life at Every Level of Living in a Storage Unit

At thirty-one, you lose your rented room and move your belongings into a storage unit that costs $129 for the first month. The plan sounds simple: keep your things there, save money, and find another room quickly. Then the storage door barely closes, there’s no bathroom, no running water, no safe place to cook, and every ordinary part of life starts requiring a separate trip. Across 8 levels, you experience what living around a storage unit really demands — gym showers, laundromats, library hours, car sleeping, summer heat, repairs, housing searches, and the constant effort of trying to save enough for somewhere legitimate to live. You’ll see: → A $129 storage unit becoming part of a much more expensive routine → Starting mornings at gas stations just to use a bathroom → Buying a gym membership mainly for showers → A car repair wiping out most of your savings → Summer heat making the unit unsafe to stay inside → Being formally told the unit cannot be used as a residence → Finally accepting your sister’s couch when the situation stops being manageable → Finding a real room with a window, bathroom access, and a door you can actually lock → Moving into your own small apartment one year later A year after the first night, your life still isn’t perfect. But you have an apartment key beside your car key, some emergency savings, groceries in your own kitchen, and somewhere to leave a glass of water for later. This is a story about housing, money, exhaustion, pride, asking for help, and learning that the cheapest option can become expensive when every basic need has to be solved separately. 🔔 Subscribe for more animated POV stories.
