EVERY SINGLE Space Marine Dreadnought Type Explained! | Warhammer 40K Castraferrum Pattern. The standard Space Marine Dreadnought is a walking armored sarcophagus housing a mortally wounded but still living battle-brother, serving as a durable front-line walker capable of engaging both infantry and vehicles. The Castraferrum pattern is the oldest and most widespread Dreadnought chassis in active service, and its design philosophy is durability over specialization: thick frontal armor, a close combat arm on one mount, and a ranged weapon on the other. Its in-universe purpose is to preserve warriors whose mortal bodies can no longer survive outside the sarcophagus, granting the chapter continued access to their experience and will to fight. The machine spirit of a Castraferrum hull is considered relatively simple compared to later patterns, yet centuries of operation allow individual walkers to develop behavioral tendencies that tech-marines treat as genuine personality, adjusting activation rites accordingly.
