Ever wondered what happens when you write your very first RISC-V assembly instruction and actually execute it?
Most of us write programs in high-level languages like C or Python. But what happens when we go closer to the processor and start programming directly using its instruction set?
In this video of my RISC-V learning journey, we're finally moving from installing development tools to writing and executing our first RISC-V assembly language program!
Using the RISC-V GNU Toolchain and Spike ISA Simulator on Ubuntu Linux, I'll demonstrate how to write a RISC-V assembly program, assemble it into machine code, and execute it using Spike — all without requiring a physical RISC-V processor!
💻 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
✅ Writing your first RISC-V assembly language program
✅ Understanding the basic structure of a RISC-V assembly program
✅ Using the RISC-V GNU Toolchain to assemble and link your program
✅ Generating a RISC-V executable from assembly source code
✅ Running RISC-V instructions using the Spike ISA Simulator
✅ Understanding how RISC-V programs can execute in a simulated processor environment

🔍 WHY LEARN RISC-V ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE?
High-level programming languages conceal many of the details of how a processor actually executes instructions.
Assembly language brings us closer to the hardware.
By learning RISC-V assembly, we can begin to understand how processors use registers, execute arithmetic and logical operations, access memory, and control program execution.
RISC-V is particularly interesting because it is an open-standard instruction set architecture with a relatively simple and modular design, making it an excellent starting point for studying computer architecture and processor design.
🎯 FROM ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE TO PROCESSOR DESIGN
In the previous episodes, we configured our Linux development environment, installed the RISC-V GNU Toolchain, and set up the Spike ISA Simulator.
Now it's time to put those tools to practical use and begin writing real RISC-V assembly programs.
My long-term objective is to progress from understanding individual RISC-V instructions to studying how processors implement them in digital hardware.
