Both are grammatical. That doesn’t mean they fit every conversation equally well. Nico and I get into the gap between textbook German and the way people actually speak: overcorrection, little words and reductions, pronunciation, and the question of whether mastering German means being mistaken for a native speaker. Nico also has a story about the times I deliberately played up my American accent at university. 😏 One expression to take away: “Genau darauf wollte ich eigentlich hinaus.” = “That’s exactly what I was getting at.” Use darauf hinauswollen to return to the point you meant to make. I’m David, an American linguist and German coach who has lived in Germany for over 20 years. Nico is German and teaches History and German at a local school in Northern Germany. The conversation includes German/English subtitles and 40 numbered vocabulary expressions, with matching highlights in both languages. For more videos like this, don’t forget to subscribe!
