Our VW T5 Engine Is DEAD — Cylinder 3 Gone, New Piston Needed! Roxy's First Day on the Bus

We set off travelling for the day, running late (and the dash cam clock doesn't help), grab food and a few bits from the shop, show a mate round the bus, then cook breakfast by the river in the wind. We also surprise the little ones with a "pumpkin patch" and load the bus up with firewood for the log burner. Then it's back to the VW T5 (2008, 2.5 TDI) to strip the engine down – and it's bad news. We found where the knocking was coming from: cylinder 3 is gone, the coating on the bore is worn away and it needs a new piston at the very least. The engine is basically dead, so it's time to work out what's next – rebuild or a new engine.
