Brazil Population by Race | 1872–2026
Explore how Brazil’s population changed by race and color from 1872 to 2026 in this animated bar chart race.
This visualization follows five major categories used in Brazilian demographic statistics:
White (Branca)
Mixed (Parda)
Black (Preta)
Indigenous (Indígena)
Asian (Amarela)
Brazil has one of the world’s most diverse populations, shaped by Indigenous peoples, European immigration, the African diaspora, Asian immigration, internal migration, urbanization, intermarriage, and changing patterns of racial self-identification.
The first Brazilian census in 1872 already included racial/color classifications. However, the terminology and methodology changed considerably over time. For example, the 1872 census used categories including Branco, Preto, Pardo and Caboclo, while later censuses introduced or modified classifications such as Amarela and Indígena. The race/color question was not collected in some census years, including 1900, 1920 and 1970.
In modern IBGE statistics, race/color is primarily based on self-identification. In the 2022 Census, approximately 45.3% identified as Parda, 43.5% as White, 10.2% as Black, 0.8% as Indigenous and 0.4% as Asian/Amarela.
Because Brazil does not have official race/color data for every individual year from 1872 to 2026, the annual values shown in this visualization combine official census benchmarks with reconstructed/interpolated estimates between census years. Recent population totals and post-census values use IBGE population estimates and projections. IBGE’s July 1, 2026 population estimate for Brazil is 214,211,951.
This visualization should therefore be interpreted as a historical demographic reconstruction, rather than an official annual census series.

Methodology note: Values between official benchmark years are modeled estimates using interpolation and demographic trends. Historical categories were harmonized into five modern visualization groups, so very early classifications are not perfectly equivalent to present-day IBGE categories.
