No Body, No Jury: The Cyber Detective's Full Testimony Tracing Kosowski's Phone to Loop Road

No body, no jury, and a phone that the State says kept a record of everything. This is the cyber-crimes detective's entire testimony, start to finish. A plastic surgeon sued for money, stopped defending the case, and was weeks from losing it when the lawyer on the other side, Steven Cozzi, disappeared. No body has ever been found. Tomasz Kosowski has fired every lawyer he had, given up his right to a jury, and now defends himself against the death penalty. Judge Joseph Bulone alone will decide the case. Detective Lance Moore works cyber crimes for the Largo Police Department, and on Day 5 he carried the digital side of the State's case for more than two hours. He has been a detective since 2014 and has worked cyber crimes since December 2020, and he tells the court he pulled the same data through more than one forensic tool before relying on it. He walks the court through Kosowski's iPhone extraction and iCloud records: a January search for Steven Cozzi's name, followed seconds later by a search for Cozzi's home. Searches about license plate flippers. A run of succinylcholine searches that started just after three in the morning. Then the morning Cozzi vanished, when the phone went dark at 8:08 and did not power back on until about 10:24. From there he builds the timeline camera by camera. The gray Tundra on surveillance video with a covered cart in the bed. The phone powering back on minutes after the truck reaches the house. Toll cameras catching Kosowski's Corolla heading south over the Sunshine Skyway that evening. And cell data he says puts the phone out near Loop Road and US-41, around the area where a dumpster was later located. He also narrates a landfill surveillance clip, describing one heavy bag that made the trash around it slump as it fell. Then Kosowski stands up and cross-examines the detective himself. He presses him on what a locked phone does and does not show, and on the one to three minute stop at Loop Road. The detective's answer on that stop is worth hearing in full: it was an approximation drawn between known data points, because he does not know how fast Kosowski was driving. That is the question I want you to sit with. The State's timeline is built from real records, but the minutes between those records are inference, and in a case with no body, inference is carrying a lot of weight. On September 23, 2026, Judge Bulone found Kosowski guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Steven Cozzi, whose body has never been found. Kosowski waived a jury for both the guilt and penalty phases and represented himself.
