Fall asleep by the fire as we spend one short winter's day and long night with a Roman soldier at the fort of Vindolanda, just behind Hadrian's Wall, around 130 AD, from the first glow of the hearth before dawn to the quiet hours of the night watch. This calm history sleep story is softly narrated over the gentle crackle of a real fireplace. About an hour and a quarter of story is followed by forty minutes of fire alone, so you can drift off whenever you like. No loud sounds, no sudden music and no mid-roll ads to wake you. From the dark of a January morning to the night watch on the rampart, we follow an auxiliary soldier from the lands around Tongeren, his messmates and his family: woollen socks and cloaks against the cold, bread, beer and fifty oysters, the new Wall on the crags, letters written in ink on thin leaves of wood, the warmth of the baths and quiet talk by the hearth.
