The Entire History of the US Dollar It is a piece of cotton paper with a dead man's face on it. It is not backed by gold, it has not been since 1971, and roughly eighty percent of every hundred-dollar bill ever printed is sitting outside the United States right now. This is the entire history of the US dollar: how a currency that started life as worthless revolutionary scrip ended up as the thing the rest of the world keeps its savings in — and what it is actually backed by, which is not what most people think. CHAPTERS 00:00 It's Just Paper 01:15 America's First Money Failed 03:45 Hamilton Creates the US Dollar 05:55 America Had Thousands of Dollars 07:30 The Civil War Creates the Greenback 09:00 J.P. No such pact existed. It is one of the most repeated false facts in finance and we are not repeating it. What did happen in the 1970s is in the video. Where numbers are disputed we use the lower, better-sourced version. The dollar's share of allocated global reserves was 56.92% in Q3 2025 (IMF COFER), down from a peak above 70% around 2000. Roughly 80% of $100 bills were held outside the US as of the end of 2022 (Federal Reserve). If we got something wrong, tell us in the comments and we will pin the correction. This is history, not financial advice. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold anything, and we make no predictions about any currency.
