AI and the Church: Discernment, Tension, and Opportunity

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how we communicate, work, and learn—but what does that mean for the Church? In this presentation, Bishop Dr. Shaun McKinley, executive director of Global Communications for the Church of God of Prophecy, explores the opportunities, tensions, and spiritual questions surrounding AI and ministry. The presentation was delivered during the Pastors Leadership Session at the 103rd International Assembly of the Church of God of Prophecy. Sharing from a Church of God of Prophecy study of 743 respondents, Dr. McKinley examines how pastors, leaders, and congregants view AI and its appropriate place in the Church. He offers practical guidance for using AI in administration, communication, sermon repurposing, and ministry organization while emphasizing transparency, theological integrity, privacy, and pastoral responsibility. Rather than responding to AI with fear or unquestioning enthusiasm, Dr. McKinley encourages the Church to approach emerging technology with biblical wisdom, Spirit-led discernment, and a commitment to ensuring that technology remains a servant of ministry—never its master.
