Your bank account may no longer be fully frozen for a single suspicious transaction. The RBI has proposed a new framework that will change how banks handle cyber fraud cases. ✅ What the RBI has proposed: Under the draft RBI (Know Your Customer) Amendment Directions, 2026, banks will temporarily freeze only the disputed transaction amount – not the entire account. An account-level hold will be used only as a last resort in exceptional circumstances. ✅ How it works: 1. AI/ML-based transaction monitoring systems flag suspicious transactions of ₹1,000 or more. 2. The bank places a temporary debit hold on the specific disputed amount. 3. The customer gets 20 calendar days to explain the transaction with proof of identity, source of funds, and context. 4. The bank has 10 calendar days to assess the explanation. If satisfactory, the hold is lifted immediately. 5. If unsatisfied, the bank refers the case to jurisdictional police through the NCRP/CFCFRMS portal. 6. Police have 30 days from referral to issue a formal statutory restraint order. If no order is received, the hold must be removed on the 31st day. 7. A temporary debit hold cannot exceed 60 days from the date it was imposed, unless a competent authority directs otherwise. 📊 What led to this framework: The Supreme Court order dated August 4, 2026, directed the RBI to formulate an SOP for temporary debit holds on accounts linked to cyber fraud and money mule activity. In the Neelkanth Pharma case, the Delhi High Court slammed the freezing of an entire account holding ₹93.50 crore due to a single suspicious credit of just ₹200. Multiple High Courts (Rajasthan, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Allahabad) have ruled that banks cannot freeze entire accounts – only the disputed amount can be held. ⚠️ Important timelines: Public comments on the draft are open until October 2, 2026. The framework is proposed to take effect from April 1, 2027, though banks may adopt it earlier. ✅ What this means for you: Your entire account will not be frozen for a small disputed transaction. You will have a clear timeline to explain the transaction. The hold will be temporary and capped at 60 days. You can access the remaining balance for your daily needs. 👉 Watch the full video for complete details: [Link] #Shorts #RBI #BankAccountFreeze #CyberFraud #LienMark #SupremeCourt #Hinglish #StaySafe #DigitalIndia
